It gave me an 'No UDF descriptor!' Error message everytime. I opened the ISO with WinRAR to check the problem.
Apparently, the ISO has different folder structure - while all my other ISOs (which work flawlessly) contain a VIDEOTS and AUDIOTS folder much like movie DVDs, the Half-Life ISO contains many files, resembling a computer game ISO. Although, I can safely say that I have downloaded a PS2 ISO.
So, what do I do now? Can I patch it, somehow? Do I have to do it manually, or is there another patcher I am not aware of? Or do I simply have to download another ISO from a different site until I find one that works? Thanks in advance. EDIT: Welp, seems like it's a CD.iso instead of a DVD.iso.
I should have known from the different file structure. Anyway thank you for help!
For the record, unpatched DVD ISOs have a similar file structure. There's always a SYSTEM.CNF, and a file named after the game ID (first-party releases in the US are usually SCUS, third-party released are usually SLUS, and there are a few other variants for Europe and Japan). Other than that, the file structure is entirely up to the developer as long as it follows the ISO9660 spec. That's actually why ESR works - the PS2 has to also support UDF for video DVDs, so ESR puts a fake DVD-video filesystem in place (this is why your patched discs show VIDEOTS), and most OSes will prefer the UDF over the ISO filesystem. ESR detects this and basically boots the disc like the system normally would, ignoring the UDF filesystem.
Sony only supported ISO9660 with PS2 game discs, hence why all official releases contain 8.3 filenames. That's a question I ask myself very often. I am that kind of person that does stuff simply because they can. And is that wrong? People went to the north pole simply because it was there. We flew to the moon simply to see if we can.
We scaled the highest mountains simply because we could. And in the end, that's what makes us human.err, what? Oh, right, the game. Got a bit carried away. Anyway, I saw it when I browsing emuparadise and I thought: 'There is a PS2 version of HL? To hell with it, I'm gonna play it.'
